Amended Press Release - New Contract for Residential Waste Service with Waste Management

This amended press release corrects information that was from a previous unedited version.  Our apologies for the confusion it may have caused.

On February 16, 2021, the City Council approved remaining with Waste Management as the City’s residential waste servicer.  The current contract with Waste Management ends on March 31, 2021.

Starting April 1, 2021, the price per month will be $19.35 for once per week trash and every other week recycling.  Quarterly bills from Waste Management through March 31, 2022 will be $58.05 for trash and recycling services.  Senior citizens (65 years and older) can receive a discount of 10% per month.  Every other week yard waste service is optional and will cost $6.00 per month for the first year.  Weekly yard waste service is $12.00 per month. The next quarterly bill reflects the new prices.

Additional services:  An additional trash container is available for $2.00 per month and an additional recycling container is available for $2.00 per month.  Appliance recycling is $25 per item and should be scheduled in advance. Residents are entitled to 1 bulky item per month at no charge. Additional household bulky items can be disposed of for $10 each.  Residents will also be allowed to place bulky items out for collection at one of four annual scheduled bulky item events. Residents can request a smaller trash container (64 gallon) at no charge.  All residents will be required to have a waste management trash container; occasional overflow of loose bags outside the cart is acceptable, and more than one trash receptacle is always allowed.  Please contact Waste Management at (800) 964-8988 for questions, to sign up for senior citizens discount, or to request any of these additional services.

A representative from Waste Management will be on hand at City Hall to assist senior citizens who would like to sign up for the 10% discount in doing so. The representative will be at City Hall this coming Thursday March 18th from 10:00 AM until 3:00 PM, as well as Thursday April 8th from 9:00 AM until 3:00 PM.

Added notes from Waste Management:

The language in the press release indicates that no amount of overflow is acceptable, but it’s our position that if it has been acceptable in the past, it should certainly be acceptable going forward.

While we encourage residents to rent an additional cart if they plan on having regular amounts of overflow, it’s certainly not a requirement by us.  Residents will still be able to place additional bags at the curb outside of their cart, and if they do have regular overflow, they can use their own personal trash can if they don’t want to rent one from us.

Waste Management has no intention of going backwards in scope of services for the City, only forwards and we are proud to provide service to Mascoutah.
